Well, first off, I want ones that are year round regardless of type. I have a list of Dews that are but have not been able to find pitchers, fly traps nor any other info on others that are.

Second, how do you feed them? I thought about getting some flightless fruit flies or other fly pupa and having as food for them. Other small insects will find their own way into the traps but I want to make they get enough if that is even an issue.

Third, how can you tell if they actually need a terrarium? I see lots of pictures of ones that are simply in a pot and no humidity anything. I realize most Venus type need a terrarium and some other do but care info is so scattered it is hard to get reliable information pertaining to a specific species.

Any help would be appreciated. Maybe I will eventually get one to live long enough to get seeds and be able to trade for something.

I found a source for carniverous plant seeds for you:

    http://rareseedsource.com/carnivorous.php

I have a pitcher plant in the house as well as one in the garden. The one in the garden has died back now until spring but here's a piccie of it from earlier this year.

This is the one I have in my kitchen. As you can see neither of mine need a terranium.

You don't have to feed them as they only digest a few insects each year. They are great plants to have around in a greenhouse as they help to keep down the number of insects that can damage your other plants. I'm going to invest in either some seeds or more plants next year. :-D

Have you ever seen flowers from the one in the house? Do you know the scientific name? Does it go dormant in the winter?

I love the look of yours. I hope to find some sundew also to have a veriety of plants and so the kids and myself can watch it eat the bugs.

The ones I have don't produce flowers Fish. The outdoor one is now dormant but will shoot up again in spring. The indoor one stays the same all year round. Its pitchers dry up but there are always new ones growing from the leaf tips.
The Latin name for the one in the house is from the family Nepenthaceae.

I've seen the Venus fly trap produce flowers, and also the sundew ones that grow wild in our marshes. As for the pitcher plants, I always thought the pitchers were their "flowers".

    oooops....

are there carni. plants for less tropical areas?
any that would live and grow in freezing winters... like die in the fall and come back in spring?
    mmm... i wonder.
i always thought they were pretty dainty plants that need special care and environment.

Calin you'd be amazed at just how many carniverous plants there are. There are things like sundew that come back year after year and grow wild here in Scotland. They can withstand really low temperatures and need next to no attention. Many of our wild flowers are actually carniverous such as butterwort and bladderwort. I have a Venus flytrap indoors that produced tiny, white flowers on a long stalk - very pretty.

Do a quick Google and you'll be blown away by the variety of these wonderful plants. :-D

There are probably a ton of carnivorous plants right here in Washington even in my cooler and wet section of the state. Bogs, marshes, swamps and whatever else are all over this state and I have read of many species that are "native" here. I have never seen them but then again, when you find a nice bog here it is likely so deep in muck and gunk that you will never get out if you do get in.

Eileen, I have yet to find your pitcher plant but I have not given up trying yet. :(

I did find one sundew I really want. Drosera aliciae is the name of it and I think it simply looks awesome. Should be really cool to see it catch and curl up around the bugs it catches.

    Drosera aliciae pictures and info.

I am trying to get more info form the site as to wether it has to be in a terrarium or not but I don't think it does.

If i remember correctly Fish this plant isn't frost hardy. If you put it in the garden then I'd most definately bring it indoors for the winter or you could lose it.

None of mine will be outside. I only leave the hardy roses and trees and such outside. When I asked about a terrarium I just meant if it could be kept out for display or if it had to be in the little glass cage of a terarium. I like Terr well enough but they really don't serve to observe and interact with any plant.

They are selling venus fly traps at Lowe's. I got one the other week and it's doing well so far. It even sprouted a new mouth. Last year I got a sundew to help control the gnat problem, but I didn't know how to keep it over winter and it died off. I really like carnivorous plants, too.

I got a couple venus fly traps recently too. They are doing well but I need to get them a larger place so they can spread out some. It is fun to feed them and my kids a kick out of them and how fast they are.

I still hope to find a nice sundew soon that lives all year long. I hope to have the room to give a nice place to thrive and keep the gnats in control.
