Has anyone had luck with carrots? The kids want to try and plant some. Most of my soil is not that good,(Black Gumbo) so If I try to grow them I will have to do it in a long containter. Any varieties easier than others? Will they do good in potting soil? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
We've got heavy soil too, so we built a small, raised bed for them. We mix lots and lots of sand in with the soil. Actually, there's more sand than soil, come to think of it. The soil is a normal shop type, and it's worked well here. We don't do anything fancy at all, just prepare the soil, sow them, thin them and eat them. The sandy soil is about 8 inches/20 cm deep. Our carrots are eaten way before they get that long. We do put a thick layer of horse dung in the bottom of the raised bed though, to provide additional heat for the seeds, due to our normally cold temperature. That's probably unnecessary where you are. We sow red (Purple Dragon), orange and yellow (Yellowstone) carrots, just for the fun of it. The orange ones are early ones, we never manage to save any for autumn anyway.
