They've just about finished devouring the fennel. I don't think I have anything else in there for them to eat. There is a Passion Flower vine.
What happens now? Should I hurry up and get another fennel planted? Or will they roam elsewhere looking for food?

I wouldn't worry too much about them Cheryl. I'm sure they'll find something else to eat in your garden without too much trouble - I know the caterpillars I get certainly do. Before you know it they'll pupate and then turn into beautiful butterflies for you. :-D

I found one yesterday outside of the "protected area". I nearly stepped on it! It was on a weed that sort of looks like fennel. So I just pulled up the weed and 'cat and placed them back inside. It quickly went right back to the fennel. I'd have cried myself silly if I had squished it.
Guess I'll just let them be. But they sure are fun to watch grow!

How many do you have? When they turn into butterflies are they restricted in flight or do they just fly away?

Jerry.... there were 7 at one point.Today I could only count 5. Don't know if they wandered off or if something made a meal of them.
There is nothing to contain them... it's just a bed that I've planted nothing but butterfly-beneficial or butterfly-attracting plants.
Honestly, the plants are struggling. But are doing better since I've been giving them a bit more water.
