We had a cold front come through last night. Was 58 deg. F this morning. We have another one coming through this evening. It is supposed to be down in the mid- 40's F for the next few evenings. I was out in the yard walking around a bit ago and I noticed that we are over run with crickets. They chirp so much at night, you can hardly hear yourself think! Under the big Burr Oak the ground is littered with acorn hulls where the squirrels have been working on them. Walnuts and walnut leaves are dropping like crazy. These are the first leaves here to change and fall.
It is raining acorns here too, and the crickets are very noisy, but nowhere near as deafening as those rotten locusts this summer. It is 57' today. The leaves are falling, and we had a few light showers today.
Wooly bears!! Hey Captain, have you seen any wooly bears?? I'm itching to find out what kind of winter we are going to have this year. Jerry
The crickets and grasshoppers are extremely numerous here this year too. Just driving up our driveway they are hopping all over the car. Crickets keep getting into the house too, and keep everyone up all night! I've seen wooly bears!
Jerry, I have only seen one wooley bear and that was back in July. He was showing an average winter. But was he for this coming winter or left over from last winter?
Well it's 48 deg. F this morning with a strong northeast wind. Down close to 40 for Fri. morning they say.
Jerry and Captain, I haven't noticed many woolly bears this summer, either. The few I did notice or found were tiny, as in maybe 1/2 inch long. maybe close to when they hatched? but the cabbage loopers are awful. I have never seen so many before. Cold and wet this morning, though.
