Last Sunday, my wife went to Kroger's grocery and she used a self check out machine. To pay, she used her debit card. Someone talked to her and she was distracted and forgot to get her receipt. When we got home, I took the receipts and was entering them into the check register. For Krogers I had to go online to see how much she had spent there. Well to my surprise there was 3 deduction for the same amount, at the same time and the same store! It took her until today, with calls to the bank and several calls to Krogers to get it straightened out. After the first call on Sun. the store shut that register down and called the repairman! The total of the purchase was only $27. but when you triple that amount it was worth getting it straightened out!
We always check our receipts, especially if we are using our debit or credit cards. Thanks for the tip. dooley
Yeah, we have been through several debit screwups. That sounds like the machine was malfunctioning. After several card number thefts (like that Target mess last year) we have alerts set on our checking account that any debit amount over $1 will send a text to the iPhone. We were at a hotel last year and got dinged three times for the hotel bill. Randy called the bank, registered a complaint, they backed off two of the debits and the money was back in our account in 2 hours. If you don't have an iPhone, then sign up with your bank so you can access your account on the computer anytime you want. I check our account daily to make sure everything is good. Keeping receipts is good but if you don't check your account regularly you don't know if something is happening until you get the bank statement every month.
So let's see if I can tell you this.....my bank suggested we convert our account to a more secure one. We did it..we didn't have time to activate the cards and I got a call that it was compremised. I will wondered how someone could use it if we did t activate the thing...they charged a ton all over the country.. So it doesnt matter if you activate the thing or not, you are still at risk..... They deleted every charge that the bed guys make...
Our bank has a web site where you can sign up for online banking. That's where I checked to see how much the charge was. The one nice thing is, if someone hacks it, we aren't liable for anything they take!
Yes I do that also but this was a charge card attached to that account. It wouldn't have shown up till the next Monday. The fruad dept caught it on Saturday night...
Online banking is a wonder. Seeing all your account activity at any time and having real time talk is sure comforting.
Good tip Cap't. I am a bit leary of the self check out things. I only use them if I am buying one or two things.
