We went to Cameron today to pick up our dozen Australorp chicks. I refer to Ideal Poultry as "the adoption agency."

The chicks come in a ventilated box with matting on the bottom and a removable top so I can peek at my babies all the way home.

And after a car ride, a little lunch and a big drink of fresh water, the chicks are ready to settle into their nursery box and take a nap.

You'll notice one has her foot in the feed--their table manners are going to need some work.

Those are cute little ladies. It will be fun to watch them grow up and see how they integrate with the rest of the flock.

How exciting! Those chicks look quite good. Never mind the manners--they will come later. hahaha

Where will you keep them initially?

Thank you all for the comments--I'll read them to the babies later. :)
They passed their first night in the nursery all huddled together where the heat mat warmed half the nursery box. After cleaning the nursery box this morning I can attest that all their functions are working well.
They will spend two or three weeks in the nursery box in the guest bedroom with occasional forays outside in a "playpen" the last week or so before they go into the big coop, where they will have a bigger "playpen" until they are big enough to not get lost in the big coop! The playpen is simply a small, moveable coop with no bottom to it, but a removable top.

Naaaaw, I wouldn't get anything done if I had such cuties in the house. :D I'm certain they'll have better manners when they grow up.

They are just to adorable. Yes they do not have many social manners at that age. They will even poop in their food and water. But their cuteness helps one over look such things. :stew1:

Philip, they are not guaranteed as to sex--usually in a group of 8-12 you get a rooster. The first time we got chicks, one was a rooster. He was one mean son-of-a-gun, even to the point where he got up on the patio and pecked at the sliding door, wanting in to wreak havoc! His name was Cyrus, and he took a ride down the road.
If any of these turn out to be roosters I'll see if he has a sweeter temperament. If so, he can stay. If not, well. . . .

Lol Cyrus!,..i remember getting a shock when i heard one of mine crowing early in the morning,..it was my wake up call to the fact i had a rooster,..the hens had big combs so it was hard to tell when they were young,..it ended up i had a few roosters,..it was hard to decide which one to keep,..though the one i kept was a good guardian.
