Did you know that Chickweed is a nutritional power house. Most people just consider it a nasty weed. But it contains plenty of Vit.C, rutin, biotin, choline, inositol, PABA,vit.B6 &B12, vit.D, and beta corotene. It is also an excellent source of the minerals magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, sodium, copper, and silicon. You can eat it raw or cooked. When cooked it has a spinach like flavor. Cook it for only 3-5 min. so you don't destroy some of the nutritional value. And you thought it was only a bad weed. You harvest it like other herbs. Just cut it off an inch or 2 above it's growing point and it will come back thicker. Yummmmy :D

Philip does chickweed grow where you live? I know that there are several kinds in that family. All are edible.

It sure does,..i was plagued with it in a previous garden,..no sign of it here though,..knock on wood.

I am always interested in "things to eat",..that can be found growing about the place,..our lake is quite big and prone to sudden changes in weather,..i often have to head for an island,..sometimes remaining there overnight and hunger sets in quickly with all the fresh air,..after i have eaten food i took with me,..anything goes,..then the dogs get worried, :D .

Wow, sounds like fun being able to go off to an island to spend the day. Well if you get super hungry just pick up some chickweed and munch on that. It is sooooo good for you. I don't think the dogs would be to crazy about it though. :-D

I love chickweed. I snack on it when I work in the garden. I prefer to eat it raw, mostly because there isn't enough to cook. I also eat it if I come across it in anybody else's garden or when I'm out and about. We've got plenty of rain so it's always very juicy and crunchy.

Droopy I love doing the same thing. I have a lovely bunch growing in one of my large flower pots and every time I go past it I break off a few pieces and munch on them. Yummmm. ;)
