I received a Christmas Cactus in November and it shortly bloomed. Its still doing well,but I would like to know if it will bloom again this new year. The plant is inside where its warm and late afternoon sunlight. Thanks for help in advance,sleep warm ed
Not likely. Initiated by a photoperiodic response to the shortening daylight hours a Thanksgiving cactus(Zygocactus truncates) flowers about 6 weeks before Christmas. The Christmas Cactus(Schlumbergera bridgesii) flowers over the Christmas/New Year holidays. Each is identified by the features of the lobes, Thanksgiving cactus have pointed lobes while Christmas cactus have rounded lobes. On occasion two or more plants occupy the same pot and flower according to the available light, may flower at different times. Independent of light, a temperature in the mid 50's F can introduce bud setting in order to have the plant flower ahead of time. Again if more than one plant is in the same container or a plant experiences necessary temperatures on one side, a plant will seem to bloom twice. One year the our Thanksgiving cactus sitting in a bay window without being rotated experienced the necessary cold to produce flowers earlier than usual. three weeks ahead of the rest of the plant. I have 3 or 4 different cactus crammed into the same pot and all bloom at different times. They like to dry out thoroughly between waterings and love the south window in my office. Oh yeah, and cat hair! They seem to thrive on cat hair =^..^=
We are trying to hard to keep our Christmas Cactus alive in this office! Interesting about putting more than one in the same pot I'd like to try that
