Tomorrow, Christmas Eve, young James and I will trot off to the allotment to gather veggies for the holiday season. I was worried that the ground would be frozen solid and I wouldn't be able to dig any carrots or parsnips, but this evening we have had lots of rain which has melted most of the snow away. I hope to bring home kale, cabbage, sprouts, parsnips, carrots, beetroot, leeks and perhaps some parsley and lettuce. That should feed us, and the scraps will feed the guinea pigs, lizard and tortoise during the holidays. I shall post some piccies tomorrow with our haul.

    Merry Christmas Stewbies.

I'm glad you got rain so that you could get your veggies in EJ.
I wish I could even see what's growing in my garden at the moment but it's under 18" of snow.
Have a wonderful Christmas all of you and enjoy your Christmas dinner with all those lovely veggies. :-D I'll look forward to seeing piccies of them soon.

Mm good. Your dinner is going to be so special...

My yard is still buried under snow. But there are no veggies in there anyway...

No, no more snow. It snowed for about 29 hours but none since then. It's just been so cold, it hasn't melted.

That was the trouble here DaisyBeans. Our snow couldn't melt for the temp ataying around -10 degree almost all snow was still here and then yesterday we got 6-8 inches on top of 6 to 8 inches already.
It would be hard to dig veggies out here for all deep snow and the high today 13 degrees.

At last, time to actually sit down and resize the piccies. Christmas is sooooo busy!!

Anyhows, managed to get to the allotment Christmas Eve....eventually. As you know, we have had snow, which thawed a little, got rained on, and then refroze into sheet ice. James and I headed out around lunch time to collect the veggies, and drop in a couple of last minute cards. I don't know why I did what I did, but one of my chums lives in a little unmade lane at the end of the allotment road, and her drive is on a slope....you can guess it can't you? I slipped down the drive, and of course, couldn't get the car back out! James and I chipped away at the ice to try and get some traction, but no. I telephoned Mark, and fortunately, as it was Christmas Eve, they were just shutting up shop for the hols, so he came to our rescue. What a carry on! From there to the plot, where we gathererd brussel sprouts, savoy cabbage, carrots, parsnips, leeks, spring onion and beetroots, all delicious - the frost sweetening them more than ever.

Those are all very yummy looking. How did you cook them, in a big veggie stew or as separate dishes?

I am on the lookout for new recipes for veggies so we can try new ones, there are so many we have never tried.

Nice looking veggies! I'm surprised the hard frost didn't turn them into mush. I hope your car didn't suffer any damage, EJ?

Those were some hard won veggies on that day. I hope the sliding around part doesn't become part of your Christmas tradition! I have to say, when I see those fresh veggies, that makes my mouth water. Especially the brussels sprouts. I'm with Toni in wondering how you cooked them all.
