Our little town had their annual Christmas Parade today. It was huge, about 75 units and it took 45 minutes to get past me. Here are some of the better units in it. First is the Honor Guard. Then came the Shriners Tin Lizzy contingent. They are small, but noisy. Then it was the American Legion's La France antique fire truck. This group representing Honor Flight takes a little explanation. It is a group of pilots and organizations that volunteer, time and money to fly Veterans to Washington D.C. to visit all of the war memorials. This free of charge to the vets, no cost what so ever. Their priority were the WWII vets and then it moved to the Korean War Vets. and now is open to any vets. Their were several antique cars. And several horse drawn units as well. And of course Santa was last in line!
Great parade! It's so nice to see small towns get together and celebrate, whether it's Christmas or the 4th of July, or just a local celebration.
Hey CK you're a vet and we have lots of war memorials here in Scotland. Any chance of you coming over on a free visit? I promise to make you a cuppa and even some toast if you do. All our parades have been cancelled, for the time being, because of the dreadful weather but we're hoping that at least some will still take place before Christmas. Thanks for sharing your with us all. :-D I love Tin Lizzies, the antique car and the horse drawn units best of all.
This is great to see. The only parades we get to see here is the New Years parade of the minstrels. It looks like great fun. :-D
It was cold at about 30 deg F. And the wind was out of the north at a brisk pace. I was lucky enough to find a spot to park the car where I could set inside and and take pics. There was a lot of people there to see the parade.
Todays paper said that there were more than 80 units in the parade. That's outstanding for this little town. The local motorcycle gang even participated!
That parade looked like a good one! So nice to have lots of participants. It is a great thing for a town to kick off the holiday season. This is the first time in 20+ yrs. that my city has not had the holiday parade. There are a number of reasons, one being funding (sadly) Also, people are kind of pushing to have a parade in a warmer month. It can be rather cold here in December... there were years that the high school bands could'nt play because it was damaging their instruments! Not to mention the people freezing to the sidewalk while trying to watch! Ha It will be missed.
There is no funding for our parades. The different parades are sponsored by different organization. The Christmas parade is sponsored by the Elks Lodge. The Memorial Day parade is sponsored by the VFW and the July 4th parade is sponsored by the local American Legion Post of which I am a member. All participants are voluntary and bare any of their own expenses. Works out great! This year we had more churches and businesses in it than ever before. What better way to advertise to the local people!
