My cilantro (PS: Coriandrum sativum) has grown like crazy in the past couple of weeks, nearly as tall as me and flowering. Is it done and should I toss it in the compost or is there any hope for it?
Wow! I've never seen it grow any taller than about 12" !! I would try cutting off the blooms to see if it would keep growing. Or else save some seed for next year
Throw it away!!! OMG, i'm having a breakdown here. Don't throw it away, eat it. Eat the flowers too. Cut the flowers off, infact cut the plant down a third of the way and you will get even more shoots off the plant. Then take those cuttings and make some salsa!! Flowers and all. When i see flowers starting on mine, i pinch off the flower end, eat it, and keep on going to where i was headed in the first place. salsa cilantro and fish cilantro in a salad cilantro and onion pesto just a very very few things to do with it. ohh yeah cilantro and tomato sandwich!
Cilantro is also known as coriander when it flowers and goes to seed. Let the seeds dry and grind them. I use it for seasoning all kinds of meat and vegetable dishes. Dooley
Thanks for the advice. Being the procrastinator I am so far I've done nothing other than water it each morning. Kind of a perversion for me to see how high it will grow I guess! Its starting to get top heavy and bend a bit so I think I'll take the advice about hacking them off a third of the way up and drying the flowers.
Gee whistler. I wish I was there. I would put in practice exactly what Biita is suggesting - EAT it. Do enjoy your Coriander/Cilantro. It is amazing that yours grew so big. Mine never gets the chance. I harvest (probably too often and so do my dogs, hence the fact that they do not grow high).
LOL you people crack me up!! Throw away a perfectly good herb??? Are you mad!! Off your meds?? You better eat it!!
