We have inherited a dining room table but it is impossible to clean and get a shine on. It is solid dark wood but I think it has been waxed and waxed some more. When I rub my dry finger on the surface, rolls of yellow goo lift off. Any ideas what I can use to remove this gunk and start again? I don't want to sand it, would just like to polish the darn thing. Thanks in advance.

Won't repainting in the same color help? Is it painted now?

We cleaned an old buffet using lots and lots of strong detergent. I don't know the name of the stuff but it smells like nothing else and clears sinuses instantly. Is there something called ammonium in English? That did the trick for us. We washed it outside, mind. The smell is too strong to work with indoors.
