Dear gardening friends. I have had a number of clematis in my roof garden boxes (big ones) for anything from 8 years ago to 3 years ago. Only 2 of them have succeeded in growing to 5 feet or more. Some of the others give a lot of good size flowers but all bunched down on the first 18 inches Others are just very slow growing. I have a lovely two toned one that is supposed to give 3 inch flowers but only produces 1 1/2 inch flowers on a 2'6'' stem. The roots are well protected from sun and I have added a little lime to their root area. Can anyone advise me so that I can have those lovely spreading clematis plants all over my trellises? Thanks in advance. Phil
Are you feeding them? These guys are heavy feeders, and like the same food roses do, so that's what I give mine. Your older ones are going to need their soil refreshed as the original nutrients are long gone. Mine are in pots too, and I just carefully dig out the potting soil from the top each spring and top them off with some new soil. Hmmm, not pot-bound are they? They make a pretty good sized root system so need BIG pots. I'm out of ideas, lol. Hope there was something in there of value.
