I'm a container gardener and have serveral clematis. My most prolific flowering is the viticella 'Abundance'. I've had it seven years and have always pruned it back hard in late March. This year I already have new growth from top to bottom so am reluctant to prune it back next month. What should I do ?

Hi there Wendy. :-D I have the same thing happening with my clematis this year. I'm not going to prune them back as I want to see how they do without any interference from me for a change. Usually I do what you do though and give them a severe haircut. I normally cut them back in either late September/early October or late March/early April. Hope this helps.

I was considering planting some clematis this year - I'll have to keep this advice in mind, thanks!

I have a number of container grown Clemmies, too.
I let them go without their haircuts last year, I think I had better tend to them this year.
