Last year, my compost heap was a cold one, in other words, I didn't have enough bulk of green matter, or I didn't use hot, fresh stable manure to get the compost heap toasty hot to kill off seeds and weeds. I shouldn't have added seed heads or weed roots, but being as organic as possible, I compost as much as I can, and bolted lettuces and bolted chard and spinach all ended up on the heap. As usual, in early spring, I started spreading my home made compost around and about on my plot and began to plant. As the weather warmed up, weeds started to germinate, as expected, but what I didn't expect were the Bonus, edible seedlings that have sprung up. Can you see the different lettuce and coloured chard babies?
Oh yes!! A real bonus indeed - all those free babies. Makes getting rid of the weeds that appeared too more than worth while.
Super-dooper! A famous Dutch "philosopher" once said: "Every disadvantage has its advantage". This proves that theory. Good pic illustrating your point.
