Building a cold frame. Can I put linseed oil on it to help preserve it? I don't want to buy paint if I can help it. Thanks for any suggestions.

I think that it would work if you put more than one coat on it. I have read that beekeepers here paint their hives with linseed oil to protective preservation.

It is a darn sight less expensive than paint that's for sure.

Linseed oil is used to help maintain and preserve wood handles on yard tools. I imagine you would have to put on multiple coats like Sjoerd said. You might also need to repaint it multiple times during the year. Tool handles left out sometimes need multiple coats through out the seasons. New wood today is very fast grown and harvested therefore very porous.
