This spring I started Hibiscus plants from seed taken from a rose colored plants. To my surprise the new plants had white flowers. Does anyone know why this would happen?
Was the plant a hybrid? Seeds from hybrids, will not usually be the same as the plant they came from....that is if they germinate at all.
I really don't know if it's a hybrid. I was lucky to get 4 plants out of the seeds I planted w/o any effort. They all bloomed the first year. I'm happy for that, but, really curious as to why the change in color. Thanks for getting back to me.
Most likely your hibiscus was a hybrid, it seems that most of them are. Hybrids are only true to form if you propogate via rooting or if it sends out a sport, which I have never had happen with hibiscus. Seeds from hybrids usually revert back to one of the parent stocks that were used, so most likely there was a white hibiscus in your plant's heirarchy.
I think you guys hit the nail on the head!! I'm going to start new plants from cuttings today. Thanks for your help!
