Wondering if anyone has any experience with columnar apple trees? Would love to hear anyone's information/experiences about them. Just wondering if they'd be worth trying?

Hey Miss, Well I am back.
The type that I have is called "Moonlight". I bought two of them last november. Here it is almost a full year, and they did not produce any apples to speak of. There were quite a few blooms and then some apples, but they all fell off before harvest time.

Now I notice that neither one of them grew very much and there are some canker-like lesions on both trees today.

Since I have had these two trees for less than a year, I do not feel that I can recommend or not recommend them...I need more time. They have not gotten off to a good start yet, that is for sure.

Let me know what you decide to do. They are (on paper) the perfect tree for an allotment or small garden because they are not meant to be grown wide like a "normal" apple tree.

Thanks for the info Sjoerd. Years ago I tried graphed multi-variety (4-way) apple and cherry trees. The 4-way apple never had the over all vigor of a single variety tree. The apple like the cherry was hard to keep properly pruned to support all the varieties. I guess I am debating my willingness to try another experiment. The single variety fruit trees have been much easier to maintain and take my abuse. Sounds like the columnar trees might be a little more susceptible to problems. I will have to ask you how they do next fall. The third year is usually the proof.
