My computer has been sounding different today...I think maybe it is going to crash. It is running or sounding like a fan , sometimes getting louder and then it lets up a bit...anything I can do to stop this besides shutting down? It is 84 degrees in the computer room, could that be it? Thank you Sherry
Could be a dodgy fan Sherry, just a guess. Does the sound get louder when you are doing something that is making the computer work harder e.g. watching a YouTube video?
Even when I am just opening e-mail and as soon as I turned my computer back on it it louder than it ever has been. Doesn't quit at all. It sounds to me like a motor winding down then picks up speed and then goes down again and this keeps up. I guess if I am absent for more than a week you will know my computer died on me...Thank you, Sherry
Sometimes I think my fan is running loud when there is a CD in the drive Sherry. Did you check to see if there is a CD in it?
Netty, I was going to offer the same suggestion. I have forgotten a disk on rare occasions and heard the motor whining. That was the reason. Sherry can you back everything up quickly, just in case? Hope it isn't your computer getting sick.
As Gaylyn says back everything up ASAP Sherry or you may lose it all if your computer crashes. It does sound as though there's a problem with your fan and that it's overheating. It may just require a thorough clean in a computer workshop but best be on the safe side and switch it off once everything is saved. It would be really handy if you had a computer 'geek' near you that could diagnose the problem for you. I searched the web for you and found these sites that be of some use to you: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-fix ... y-computer http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/ ... -fans.html
Thank you everyone...today the computer is back to normal...quiet as a mouse so it had to be the heat...if it happens again I will check it out. Usually we have our air on but it is too early in the season , just turned the heat off last week. We will be getting back to normal in the weather in a day or so.. I will check some of those areas to back things up. I do have disks of my earlier pictures but haven't gotten around to this years..Sherry
Sherry, my puter does this once in a while too. In my case, it's either the heat or the dust. Try vacuuming the vents on the side of the computer and see if that helps things out at all.
The fan is probably touching something , try giving it a firm whack with you hand and / or vacuum it .
Better don't give it a whack when it's switched on and the hard disk is turning... That might be the end of it. If you can't resist, switch it off, give it a whack and switch it on again. If that doesn't work, at least it can make you feel better
We bought a laptop cooler (basically a fan you sit the laptop on) for those times when ours overheats...Rocketfish has a decent one you can get at any electronic store Hope that helps for the future
I have known my PC to make that loud sound when it was very warm in the room. It almost always sounds loud like that when I am using Norton to run a virus scan but stops once the scan is over.
Sometimes if a computer begins to overheat it will make the sound you described (I'm a computer geek so I know this first hand)
