When planting in a container never plant anything that will get taller then three times the height of your pot. If you pot is 8 inches tall, your tallest plant should not be over 24 inches tall.

With that bit of info, I found a really nice branch from a fallen tree, stuck it in the middle of my whiskey barrel and planted a passion vine to climb it. The branch goes straight up, then all of the little branches go off to one side. I think when it is covered it will look really cool. Now I need something yellow that trails and it will be complete, unless I find something else to put in it. Maybe some asparagus fern?

Great tip Sharon, do you know if this is because of the optimal plant height to root height ratio or purely an aesthetic matter?

    Maybe one of the following?
    - Bidens
    - Creeping Zinnia
    - Nasturtium
    - Black-eyed Susan vine

How about some yellow Calibrachoa Sharon?

Frank, it is because of aesthetics. Any taller and your arrangement would be out of balance.
Thanks for the plant tips also, but I have been thinking of the Calibrachoa like Netty suggests. I think it would hold up to our heat better, if not I will use the creeping zinnia.
