Darned pests! I had a problem with the raccoons tipping over the galvanized garbage can I keep my chicken feed in. Solved it by putting carpet tack strip on the top of the can. Once their paws hit those tacks, they left the can alone!
Can you put some carpet tack strips on top of the pot until they get the idea? I guess anything prickly like rose trimmmings would work.

MY SYMPATHY, Koszta Kid! Those darn things are horrible at this time of the year. They are feeding babies and will go places they normally don't. Last week one got into my sisters barn and destroyed a nest of eggs and the little hen sitting on it. One of the roosters was gone, too, then he showed up yesterday with two tail feathers left (nothing else, I guess or not many feathers anyway). She said he was a mess and couldn't get close to him. But the good news is...the 'coon won't be bothering the chickens anymore. I had one knock the bird feeder off the tree last week and consumer the entire refill (go figure  ) I had just put out. Dumped over my compost bucket, messed up the deck, yada yada...

Best coon repellant! My brother used to put down black plastic 4 ft wide around his sweet corn. Then he would sprinkle lime on the plastic. The coons would walk across it with damp feet from the dew. The lime would stick to it and burn their feet. If they tried to lick it off, it would burn their mouth. A couple of trips with the lime and they left the corn alone!

I have not seen a coon in a coon's age. :) Years ago the population was thinned out years ago by rabies. They usually left the trash cans alone as we tried not to leave food scraps in them. I don't know if I miss them or not.

I'm having a problem of some varmint digging where I've just planted & watered. I suspect skunk or possum.Just not enough of a mess for coon.Red pepper or baby powder works.I doubt this would deter a coon.
As for coons & sweet corn,DH puts a live trap in the patch before it gets ready. He traps a lot of them. Before we had the trap the only thing that worked was to stake dog in the patch.Dog seemed to know he was on patrol & didn't fuss.

Last year my Mom had squirrels come and dig in her flower pots and made a real mess. Not to say killed several plants in doing so. But those coons can be really pests to deal with. 2 days ago we cut our small pasture for hay for our 2 goats. On Tuesday evening I looked out the patio doors to see a huge coon walking around just before dusk to see if it could find something to eat. It was pretty far away and getting dark out. But if it had been a little lighter out we would have had one less racoon. :scheming: They are great carriers of rabies. Much more than any other wild critter.
For critters like ground hogs and such I use Shake-Away sprinkled around my barn to keep them out. It is Coyote urine and it really does a great job.
I usually sprinkle blood meal around my garden to keep the critters from digging in it. So far so good. We quite growing sweet corn becuase it was such a job to keep the racoons from destroying it all. :-x Maybe we will have to try the plastic with the lime on it. Always open for a new idea to try. :stew1:

Dh and friend use to have coon hounds. And would hunt them. It is nothing to see 10 killed on highway on 9 mile trip to town. Sandy our 1 1/2 old yellow lab ran to window last right. Dh looked young coon. She barked it ran off.Hate to see if they did any damage.

Raccoon's are having a population explosion here and it is not uncommon lately to see them during the day. They are nasty little varmints ... very destructive.
