Why is it that dads feel the need to say and do the corniest things? I know I'm not the only one that does this. When my daughter was young I would play catch with her and every time it would go something like this: Me: Amanda, you want to play catch? Amanda: Sure Dad. Me (after her first throw): You throw like a girl. Amanda: (big eye roll) I am a girl Dad. My daughter is twenty-seven now and I would still say that if we were to play catch. I know it's not funny, but I love her reaction to it. She recently posted an adorable picture of her five month old baby to Facebook. He was laying on his stomach with one hand on his chin, just like he was posing. With the help of my wife I recreated the pose with me as the focal point and posted back with the comment, "Look, we could be twins." Her response warmed my heart, "Dad... you're such a Dork." Anyway, I could go on, but I wanted to hear about things other corny dad things. Come on, I know they're out there.
My husband is always telling my daughter that she drives like a man. I don't know if it's meant to be a compliment or not though.
Not sure how corny it is but it sounded corny when I was young,,my Dad used to tell me "Can`t never could do anything". Only as I got older did it begin to make sense to me. No matter what life gives you to do,,you have to at least try your best to do the job at hand. There is no disgrace in failure,, the disgrace in in not trying.
When something was finished, or an argument came to an impasse, my daddy would say, "And that's all she wrote." For years I wondered who "she" was, and what it was that she was writing. He also had some more colorful expressions, but I think Frank would disapprove of the language!
There was a cemetery that we passed on occasion when going for our Sunday drives when I was a little girl. Every time we passed it my Dad would either say "Y'know, people are dying to go there!" or variously "Hmmm, people just won't live there." EVERY TIME. Fast forward 30 - 40 years. There was a cemetery we drove past every time I took the kids to the movies. Yeah, you guessed it......
My Dad would sing, without fail, this little ditty at the breakfast table 'Honey in the morning, honey in the evening, honey at suppertime' Now every time I have honey, guess what I sing?
"Be my little honey, and love me all the time. Put your arms around me, and swear by stars above You'll be mine forever in the heavens of love" My Mum used to sing that one too.
Whenever the 'boys' would do something that wasn't exactly wrong, but was kinda sorta questionable. They would defend themselves by saying, 'It wasn't wrong/against the rules/against the law'. I would give 'em the DAD look, and say, 'Just cause you could, don't mean you should!' I've heard it said to my grandkids............kinda nice and warm fuzzy feeling there...........something made it through them thick skulls.
