Last year I moved into a house with a very mature and overgrown rose garden. I cut them back quite a bit and the blooms were great after I did so last year. This year a couple of the bushes are doing great but a couple more looking really healthy but not flowering or only flowering at the bottom of the plant. Any advice?
Welcome to Gardenstew, Luanneg from coastal Carolina. I have a relatively new rose garden and I've had to cut plants back severely to rid them of Black Spot. Most did come back with new canes and a few blooms, but others seem to need more time to recover. I'd use a good rose food (Bayer is one) and mulch well. I have 3 rose bushes and after you cut them back in the fall they take awhile to recover in the spring. I think they spend the first year after they are cut or transplanted in gaining strength and then they bloom in subsequent years. Also are you fertilizing them? they love potatssium and you can bury banana peels right in the soil.
