Ever since I have had Samoyeds I have been putting out hair for the birds to use as nesting. I have seen goldfinches, blue tits, blackbirds and jackdaws all taking a share. The blue tits are the funniest as they try and take such a huge amount for such tiny birds they keep letting bits escape and then they chase it around the garden. This is the apple pot I use:

I used to do exactly the same when we had our old Labrador. The birds certainly seemed to appreciate the fact that they had lovely, soft nesting material available to them whenever they needed it. :-D

What an excellent way to find a use for all that pesky hair KM :stew1: I'm sure they love it.

Lucky birds to have such soft, attractive nesting material.
When I groomed our St. Bernard/Collie mix (daily) I'd get enough fur for an eagle's nest! Once I found a mouse nest in the woodshed lined in nice soft dog fur.

The birds loved the soft, blonde hair off of our golden retriever :-D One afternoon I watched a little big pick up a beak full of hair and it looked like he had a mustache! He looked like a little Wilford Brimly :D

I'm sure there must be generations of tiny birds all round the world that don't want to leave their nests with all the fur we're donating! :D :D

Kiasmum, you may be right. I just hope the birds don't start building nests directly on the dogs!

Yup I put out our goats hair for them in the spring. We have one goat that grows an angora coat for the winter. Then in spring I scatter it around the yard for the birdies to use.

Kiasmum I like the apple with the holes in it. Where did you buy it? What a great idea. :stew1:
