Last night, my sister in law Laurie, and my two nieces, Chelsie (16) and Julie (9) took me out to dinner to celebrate my birthday on Saturday. We went to our local crab house for steamed blue crabs. Yum! One of our favorites. For those who aren't familiar, they are highly spiced and we just sit around and pick the meat out of the crabs. Here are a couple of pics -- they're from the summer but you get the idea.

Blue crabs turn orange when they're steamed. The "stuff" on them is the crab seasoning.

Here is a close up of the picking. What a treat, what a treat.

I grew up catching, cooking and eating lots of crabs. When I was a kid, we only ate local crab so that limited the crab season to the summer. Once September arrived, the crabs went under the mud for the winter. Nowadays, the crab house ships blue crabs up from Louisiana so they're available all year. I guess tradition prevails -- I generally don't have a big taste for crab in the winter time. But they were a good treat last night! And good company too -- my nieces are a hoot.

Yummy! Crab is such lovely food. :D I actually prefer that to lobster when eaten au naturel. Our crabs are red, both before and after cooking. Our lobsters are blue before cooking and red afterwards. I suddenly got an urge to eat crab now.

I miss good crab cakes from when I was stationed in Virginia Beach. At first I thought you were talking about guests you were having to dinner! :)

Well Happy Early Birthday Daisybeans. Glad you had a good time with your nieces and the crabs.

I'm not a big seafood lover either, I do like properly prepared fried Catfish and Scallops tho.

    my way!!
I do remember the blue crabs and the Old Bay seasoning from our visit to Baltimore about 10 years

A very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU.
glad to hear you enjoyed your dinner. I'd let you eat enough for both of us since I'm not big on lobster nor crab.
But having dinner with family, now thats what I like doing.

Thank you, thank you. It was a lovely time. My nieces are good girls, even if you don't like seafood. As a matter of course, we all love crab so we ate 2 dozen. At this place where we went (one of my favorite places), they have long wooden picnic style table that you cover with brown paper off a big roll and everyone sits together, whether you know them or not. It's very social.

Capt Kirk, I lived in Norfolk VA for 5 years, I went to EVMS -- I miss that VAB so much. Nice hubby Deanna! It's a sign of affection for sure. I give away my back fin (second photo) to the people I love! King crab is a good stand in for the winter -- or how about dungeoness claws, yum!!! Droopy, did you get some crab? And Sjoerd.... let's just say it's the 20th anniversary of my 29th birthday. Thank you all for the well wishes.
