My yard is filled with these. If I could sell them or even sell tickets to see them, I would be rich. Each is 4" - 6" tall and at least one crawfish is living in each little house. Richard, so you want to come harvest and cook them?
That's alot of crawfish chimneys Jan!!I remember when I was a kid we would go to the pond next to our house and go crawfishing!! It was soooo much fun. We would get 5 gallon buckets full of them and Mama would fry the tails for us!! We used bacon tied on a string as bait. They would grab the bacon and then we would pull them out of the water. Toni lol us too!!
Julie, around there, folks have crawfish traps, big nets that they put old rotten chicken necks in. They throw the net in a bayou, wait awhile and then haul out the net, throw the crawfish in a box and start again. Often they have dozens of nets. When the crawfish arrive home, they are thrown alive in boiling water for a few minutes, removed and eaten. You pinch da tails and suck da heads...a favorite Louisiana activity.
Pondlady we would spend all day out getting our crawfish!! It would have been lots easier with a net but we would have missed out on all the fun!! I love to eat boiled crawfish too!! I'm allergic to saltwater shellfish so crawfish are a real treat to me!! When everyone else is enjoying shrimp and crab legs I have the crawfish!!
I did the same thing as jubabe with the bacon on a string. It was lots of fun.I also have mounds kind of like those lots bigger and fire ants live there.lol
I will have to pass on the offer Jan Have plenty right here . Yes Louisiana is wonderful isn't it, Devil Horse Grasshoppers, Fire Ants, Armadillos, Monsoon Rains, Scorching Heat and best of all Mosquitos
Am I right in thinking that nutria are a sort of cross between beavers and rats? Gosh you really do have plenty of problems to contend with Jan. I thought I had a problem with all the worm casts in my lawn and squirrels digging up my bulbs too!!!!
The squirrels here dig up the bulbs and then drop them on our heads. Cheeky little things. A squirrel is nothing but a rat with good PR.
My little buddy sez; "Everybody's gotta eat. If you big daffy creatures would just stop burying the food, we wouldn't have to dig so many holes."
One of the great things about Gardenstew is that I'm seeing stuff in other people's gardens I'd no idea went on. We must have it easy here in Blighty. Slugs and snails (neither of which I'd care to boil up for dinner), are usually my main problem, but to be honest I haven't come across one live snail here yet. And only one very small slug. I'm not starting a composting unit here as it tends to become a nice warm breeding ground for the critters. All my garden waste is recycled via the fortnightly Devon County Council door to door collection. Thanks for showing the pics. Pete.
Eileen tou are exactly right about Nutria .Nutria and fire ants are illegal aliens from South America
