A dear friend and neighbor told me she had heard of Crawford lettuce, which self-seeded easily and was practically a perennial for us Texas gardeners. She wanted some seed, but couldn't find any (she doesn't have a computer, poor child). Does anyone have any experience with Crawford lettuce? Can you tell me anything about its growth, taste, requirements? And if you know of a source for seed, I'll bless you forever! She and her husband have been so kind and generous to us, I'd dearly love to be able to give her a surprise.
Don't know about seeds, but I would be interested too. http://bexar-tx.tamu.edu/homehort/archi ... d-lettuce/ You might contact Texas A & M to see if they can help find some.
If you would like to order some seed and grow your own transplants or sow them directly into the garden, send a self-addressed, STAMPED envelope with a check for a $5 donation to cover production, shipping and handling made payable to Dee Emory to: Dee Emory, 2830 Bee Cave, San Antonio, Texas 78231 Crawford Lettuce ( photo / image / picture from jbest123's Garden )
Aha! It seems to be a Romaine type lettuce--thanks for the photo, John! I tried contacting A&M, Toni, but I think they are off for the holidays. I'll try again early in the new year. I may try the contact you gave, John. Thanks for doing my homework for me :-D .
I can check at the feed store and see what they have. That looks the same as some that is in my Italian blend. Don`t think its a Romaine type,,just similar growth pattern.
Mart, I'd appreciate that very much! I asked at our feed store, and at the local nursery, and neither had heard of Crawford lettuce. Now, another question--what is in your "Italian blend" of lettuces, and do the seeds come packaged that way, or is it something you mix up yourself? This is getting really interesting!
I googled it and it appears to be a romaine variety. I looked in a few of my seed catalogs, but couldn't find any labeled "crawford" I even looked through my Amish catalogs to no avail. sorry
I get it in the small packages at Dollar General. Usually 3 for $1.00. I buy a bunch of it. Its just called Italian Blend. I will look tomorrow and see if I still have a package. Can`t remember all that's in it. Just remember one looked like the Crawford and grows sort of upright. Its mild not bitter and produces well as long as you keep picking the leaves.
