New Hampshire, 5b; Thought this might be vinca minor or major. the leaves were smaller and more yellow earlier in the season. I have 3 pics, one with the base of a tree for scale, one that shows it starting to creep up the side of the tree, and one closer to the leaves of the vine. Picture of growth patter, it started out behind the garage in a very shady spot out of the pic to the right, and crept right out past this tree with new growth shown here. ( photo / image / picture from film495's Garden ) Starting to creep up the side of the tree. Didn't think a Vinca did that so I'm confused. Hedera helix (Common Ivy, English Ivy) click on this blue link to see photos and information. It will grow up the side of the house, into trees and eventually strangle them, if you have siding on your house it will grow up between the siding and the wall causing the siding to loosen. It does make a pretty ground cover if you can keep it from taking over objects in it's path. The north side of our house was covered in it when we bought it and the yard on the north side too. When I started gardening it took me about two years to get it all pulled up and totally gone.
Looks like English Ivy. Toxic to pets, very invasive, and generally not the first pick for a ground cover. Please get it off the tree--it will go up into the canopy and be very, very difficult to remove later.
Thank you for helping. This is very beneficial to know what it is. Can I get some recommendations for ground covers to replace it with?
Here's a link to some evergreen groundcover plants that should do well for you: http://www.finegardening.com/PlantGuide ... 5536&286=8
English Ivy grows here in my zone 5a garden, but it does not thrive. Our winters are harsh and so keeps the Ivy in check. I do not think that it would harm the tree.
I might try to get it growing up the post fo the mailbox, there's nothing else around it and should be containable.
I have some growing up and around the trellis under my deck. It's annoying, impossible to kill, and very hard to remove. I didn't plant it. Whoever was in the house before me must have not had a clue how annoying this vine is!
Creeping Charlie Vinca These are very nice ground covers. If it goes wold you just rip it out. If you would like some i could send you some. It will live up your way over the Winter. Also, if I have mis-ID'd the plants would someone please correct me? I am not really good at this stuff.
