While searching for a photo for the "are you afraid to post your photo" post, I came across these photos. I meant to post them last fall but was sidetracked by my nieces wedding and a few other things. The photos where taken one foggy morning. The birds on the edge of the pond continuously circle the pond while pecking and stirring up food. The ducks in the pond that followed is what I thought was interesting. The ducks continuously dive right by or behind the birds on the edge of the pond. My guess is the birds would stir up food and the ducks would dive down for the food that escapes. Very clever ducks.
When I was a kid my brother and I would follow the sugar-cane trucks when they bumped their way out of a cane-field and pick up the bits of cane that fell off the overloaded trucks. Yum. Reminds me of this - ducks following along because they know all that good stuff is 'falling off' the bird-pecking-patrol's salad bar ahead of them.
Lovely photos! Isn't it funny how opportunistic birds and animals can get? The smart ones always do best.
I actually live in a new neighborhood that is worked around the wet lands. We had a house built in the first stages of the development, so we pretty much got our choice of lots. We decided on a lot that is backed up to the wetlands and a pond. I love it here...all the wildlife I could ever want. I'll miss it if we have to move this fall. Primsong..your story reminds me of my husband and doggies. The doggies sit under the table...ready to snap up anything that falls their way. I've never had sugar cane....do you actually eat it or just chew on it?
