I got three little crocosmia plants from my co-worker. I am going toput them in the soil tomorrow. Any ideas/tips on what kind of soil/sun it does best on? Thanks.
The Crocosmia really enjoys lots of sun, but can also exist in partial shade. If you have the smallish yellow-orange one, it goes well with blueish-coloured plants such as Agapanthus, Aconitum, Salvia nemorosa, Aster amellus, Aster novi-belgii, Erigeron 'Dunkelste Aller', Echinops ritro and Campunula lactiflora. They do well in clumps or as walkway liners. As far as I know, they will grow in most soil types; however, they thrive best in very dry conditions. Moist and too-rich a soil will give you less than optimal results, I have found. I put them in dryish places where other perinneals don't do well and they really do great. **Do keep an eye on them though, because they have a small tendancy to get away from you.
Our Crocosmia are grown in full sun and in a dryish place, but it rarely gets dry, and as for sun... this is coastal Norway, not much sun most of the time. They are still performing very well, and as Sjoerd says, sometimes too well. We're in USDA zone 7. They bloom fairly late too.
The Orange'Yellow (Crocosmia x Crocosmiiflora)ones you are talking about will thrive in any conditions....... they are the thug of the crocosmia world. In fact in southern Ireland and Cornwall that plant is taking over the world. LOL Mark
