This crossbill hit the window and flew onto a branch close by. Didn't look to comfortable so I just went up to him and picked him up and popped him in a safer place. Update ---------- Not a great shot but the poor guy recovered, I saw it fly up into this tree.
I had to do the same for a Goldfinch recently. I put it in a cardboard box until it recovered enough to fly off too. I just couldn't leave it lying there as cats tend to get into the garden and corvids could have attacked it.
In work(lots of windows) I would occasionally get a call(bird hit window). I would take the bird, put it into a box, put it in a dark quiet place and wait till it started flapping. I would then take the still covered box outside and open the box, the bird would fly away. Works too for stunned bunny rabbits found in the middle of the road. http://www.gardenstew.com/threads/ball-of-fur-a-bunny-rescue-story.26187/ Jerry
I have to look for more of those decals that you can put on your windows to help the birds notice the window. I have some but I need more. Of course when the birds are flying fast and trying to get away from a predator, that won't help. I have had just about every kind of bird hit the window...the last was a hawk, most likely the Coopers Hawk that left the large imprint in the snow. He took off right away so he wasn't hurt, just startled. Hopefully the little bird got away that he was chasing. I am glad your little bird was alright...
