Just look what I found in my garden yesterday Iris sibirica cross-breed ( photo / image / picture from Droopy's Garden ) This is the mother: Iris sibirica ( photo / image / picture from Droopy's Garden ) And this must be the father: Iris sibirica ( photo / image / picture from Droopy's Garden ) Those two were planted next to each other for years. Mother's often been after me for not removing seed capsules but this one proved that not being too particular is a good thing sometimes. I had a tough job getting that little beauty out from between all the purple ones. Sibirian iris roots aren't exactly easy to divide. Aaaaaand... I spotted two more very light-coloured ones in between the purple ones, so I need to go out there and try to extricate them too. Oooooh, I'm so excited!
They made a beautiful baby, hope the others are as pretty...but with parents who look like those two that is a certainty.
I'll sing you a song: "Let me tell you 'bout the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees..." Thanks toni, I hope the other two will be slightly different. I may hope. Thanks, eileen, isn't it just! stratsmom, I'm sort of glad we don't know what's going on excactly. cheryl, I think "Lazy Luck" sounds just about right, since that's why it's here in the first place. Oooh, I just hope it will stay like it is and that it's not a weather fluke or disease or something similar.
Is there a Norwegian Iris Society you could submit your photo to? I found a list of the different Iris categories and your color form doesn't fall into any of them. I think it has to repeat the coloration multiple years before it can be classified as a cultivar. But wouldn't that be fun to get to name it. Amoena --White/tinted white standards, colored falls. Bicolor--Light or medium standards, and deeper contrasting falls. Bitone--Two tones of the same color. Blend--combination of two or more colors (one is always yellow). Neglecta --Blue or violet bitone. Plicata--Stitched or stippled margin color on white. Self--An iris of uniform color. Substance--Thickness of petals. Texture --Sheen or finish of the petals. Variegata--Yellow or near yellow standards with deeper falls which may be either varied or solid tones of brown or purple.
toni I don't know about a Norwegian Iris society, but if the colour holds up next year, I'll look into it. Thanks for going to the trouble to post the classifications for me. If I get to name it as a new cultivar, I'll have to put "Stewbaby" in there somewhere. I couldn't get that song out of my head, and don't want to suffer alone, so here it is:
Very pretty! I want one! *lol* Ive got that song on repeat now and probably going to be singing it all day tomorrow, thanks Droopy!
I managed to get three light-coloured iris out of the big root yesterday, and now I see there's yet another one with pale buds. I'll see if I can deal with that tomorrow.
