Last week before we had gotten snow. I looked out my patio door to see a Fox Squirrel busy burying single pieces of corn off a cob it had found. It would take one piece off the cob, bury it and then get another. But then two Crows showed up. With having a corn snack in mind. Crow and Fox Squirrel face off. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) I was shocked by what I saw next. The squirrel charged the crow and retrieved it cob of corn. But while it was busy burying one piece of corn the Crows moved in to get a snack. Crows getting a quick snack. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) Then the squirrel came running back and chased both of the Crows away from his corn cob and decided to pick it up and move to a safer location. So off across the field he scampered with his corn cob in tow. Leaving the two Crows to have to find their own lunch. I never thought a Squirrel would challenge a Crow much less two of them. It was fun to watch. Happy Squirrel and unhappy crow. ( photo / image / picture from Tooty2shoes's Garden ) The above photo is of the Squirrel picking up his corn cob before it ran off with it. The Crow voicing his opinion about the whole deal.
I had epic battle music playing in my head as I viewed your photos Tooty. Thanks for interesting rundown.
Frank that would have been great music to play as I watched them face off. I can see the squirrel welding it's corn cob like a light saber. Gfreiherr our crows spook with people but not to much with other wildlife. Like Eileen said, most of the time they rule a contest like that. But not up against a ninja squirrel wielding a light saber cob of corn. Now that would be something to see.
The crows intimidate the squirrels so often it was interesting to see the crows loose this confrontation. Jerry
