On Sunday I took myself off to the next village and spent the day walking around other peoples gardens. A selection of 20 gardens are opened to the public annually to raise funds for our local hospice. Some are only small gardens, just 30 or so foot long, where as others are a couple of acres. It is a lovely day, some houses serve cream teas, some sell plants and others have crafts for sale, but it is very good for us nosey parkers to have a good look around at different plants and flowers, and different garden designs. Here is a selection of flowers that I photographed.
EJ, you've got me drooling now. Those colours are magnificent, especially that orange-red poppy. What IS that gorgeous yellow-red-white flower three down?
I have no idea Droopy, unfortunately in a few of the gardens I couldn't find the owners to ask as there were a few flowers I was rather keen on. I did wonder if it were a type of shrub convulvulus. I am investigating.
I am also taken with the third picture. I have a hardy hibiscus that color and I love the combo. Hope you can find the name.
Oh and so do I EJ!!! :-D I'm frantically searching through my plant books but haven't found it yet. We may have to get you to take another trip to that garden to bribe the name out of the owner for us!!
HI EJ; Thanks for the flower show all the way from Danbury!! The colors are glorious. Hope you have more open gardens later on. Gardengater
Right, google cistus and see what you think. The leaves look right, I am still looking to see if I can find a bloom like that.
These fotos are spectacular. So very interesting. You guys had a great day out, didn't you. Was the open garden part of the NGS?...You know, in "the Yellow Book"? It sounds and looks very nice...just the thing for a week end trip.
I think you're right EJ - hybrid of Cistus salviifolius and Halimium lasianthum seems to be a match for the one in your photograph!!! Well done you.
Hee hee hee.... Well, last year I saw what looked like this plant growing well in a big garden called "Appeltern" http://www.appeltern.nl/EN.pdf A PDF, but the website (in Dutch): http://www.appeltern.nl/cms/home.html and so I wonder if you can't grow it in a big pot and you and your man move it to a sheltered place in the winter. I remembered being struck by it's beauty at the time. Here is my foto taken on that day. I am not sure it is the same plant as what EJ showed, but it could be the same family. It was a memorable day on many accounts, not the least of which were our visiting friends with whom we experienced this attractive garden complex.
