I am all about recycling and I love to garden, so I combined the two of them. I am planting my seeds in cardboard egg cartons and setting them on the deli trays. I then am covering them with the plastic lids to create my own mini greenhouses. I am so excited!
So you should be Grammarbug as it sounds like an ideal way to start off seedlings to me. You must take some piccies of your mini greenhouses to let us all see them.
I love to find new uses for things that would otherwise end up in the trash. Oh, yes, we would love to see pictures of your little greenhouses. I was going to use egg cartons for seeds too but my oldest daughter is a science teacher and needed them for the Science Olympiad she is taking her class to in March.
Great recycling Grammarbug. We had a display of beef sticks at the store this past holiday season. They came packaged standing up in plastic trays, 12 to the tray and we had a huge display. The individual cups were the same size as a peat cup. All I do is burn a hole in the bottom of each cup and plant them up. I figure they should be able to stay in these cups until they are ready to be planted. I love to recycle too.
Fantastic stuff Grammerbug We also reuse the disposable buttertubs, egg containers, and basically everything useful to start our little plants. Talk about the 3 Rs and we think Reduce , Reuse and Recycle.
We recycle everything,, if it can be planted in, dirt goes in it, if it can be burned for heat, it goes to the fire, if it can make my ground better, it goes to the compost.... Well done!!! keep recycling!!
I start seeds in those plastic covered trays from the grocery store (like what bakery comes in) every year. I just punch a few holes in the bottom tray for drainage, and keep the top tray closed until the seeds sprout. It's certainly cheaper than purchasing the plastic flat covers from a garden center.
I use the treys with the covers from blueberries,blackberries and strawberries.I'm a smoker as most of you know.I take my cigerette and burn little round holds in the bottoms of them.They work great.12 or 16 oz plastic cups works great too.
Well done Grammer, I love to recycle to. I've also used those cheap dollar store styrofoam coffee cups an solo cups to plant seedlings in. The clear solo cups you can keep a check on the roots an not have to disturb the plant.
You won't believe what you can find set out by the road that people throw away. Sixpacks and ninepacks and scads of small plastic pots. In the spring when people buy plants I go around and pick them up after they have put the plants in the ground.
I do most of those mentioned. I also use the large clear trays for birthday cakes. I use the lid for a nice green house . ANd yes the grape container for seeds as well as shipping plants to others. Yogurt cups also. b
silly question but if you can remember, im still learning.. when you use the containers for sprouting seeds, do you just water them from the bottom up? or do you uncover them and sprits them good with a water bottle? Thanks
