Hello all! Been out of sorts lately, but now am back. Have enjoyed all the posts that have been up for the last few weeks :-D Was watching NASA Channel Mon morn, tracking the orbiter re-entry flight path, and they had it tracked from Vancouver, N. Dak, N/E OK, Central AR, (tracked over Little Rock) GA, ALA, to FL. When its path went thru AR, I went out on the patio to look and listen, couldn't hear or see a thing. Checked back to the TV for tracking, and the shuttle was over GA, so I blew it off. Oh, wee! Looked back at the track of the shuttle, and NASA had it over central ALA, (a/b 15 or 20 sec) and about that time I heard the double-sonic boom of the shuttle. I 've heard sonic booms before, but nothing like this. I heard this BOOOOM-Boom, birds fly, the dogs ran, and a/b a minute later, the tree leaves stirred. That was one of the most awesome and awe-inspiring things I have ever had the chance to witness. I couldn't see it, but I did witness a part of history, only 1 more shuttle flight into space. 8) :-D
I didn't hear that one. We drove by the Naval Air Station in north Ft Worth a few years ago and saw the shuttle on it's carrier plane sitting on the tarmack for the night. Our schedule wouldn't let us get back over there the next day to see it leave tho. It was very exciting to see the shuttle, wish I could have seen it up close. But sadly I did hear the boom when Columbia exploded pretty much exactly over my house in 2003. :'(
Most of us from my company were standing outside looking for it but the radio stations had us looking in the wrong direction so all we heard was the boom. I am thankful they all made it back safely. I remember when I was in school watching columbia lift off. I remember vividly the whole catastrophe. The teachers hurriedly turned off the TV and took us all outside for an unexpected recess. I didn't really know what happened until I got home that night and my dad was watching the news. It is amazing how even at that young age I can still see it in my mind like it was yesterday...but I can't remember some of what actually happened yesterday. Oh BTW I posted some new pics I took today of my garden. Green
Yes,toni lots of things were found from the Columbia near here and when it exploded it almost knocked me out of bed.I worked at nights then and was asleep. I was on my paper route one morning when one was coming down to land and it was so plain and a wonderful sight to behold.
Pieces large and small were found for months. A friend of mine had a piece of a door on her property. There are 3 national forest around close and those were gone over with a fine tooth comb! And it had to be done before the vegetation started growing.
My hubby was there to see the shuttle land. He's with Boeing and there for another project, but said the shuttle is always an amazing sight.
I lived in south Florida in the mid-late 1970's, we drove up to Cape Canaveral very early one morning to watch a launch of one of the rockets, don't remember which one.. It was a thrilling site to see. By the time of the first shuttle launch in 1981 I was not longer living down there, that would have been a great experience. We also could watch some of the middle of the night rocket launches from the yard of the apartment complex where we lived in Juno Beach. Didn't get the rumbling in the chest affect but we could watch the rocket for quite a while as bright as it was.
