how the saying" It will cost you an arm and a leg started?" Back in the 1700's their were no photographs, only paintings of people. The artists found it hard to paint arms and legs. So if you wanted a portrait they charged by the number of limbs that were to be in the portrait. The more arms and legs, the more expensive the painting would be. Hence "that cost me an arm and a leg!"
