My aunt called a few weeks ago to brag that her Dinner Plate was blooming. I had to tell her that mine had baby buds (I started mine from some of her seeds about 3 years ago). She laughed at me... again. Last weekend, we went over to weed-eat, etc. And I just had to take a picture. This was one of her husband's favorites... you can see why. Uncle Frank's Dinner Plate Hibiscus 6/22/13 ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) Mine finally bloomed today. And it's closer to a saucer than a plate! Hibiscus White Dinner Plate ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden ) I can only hope that one day mine will be as lovely as her's (or at least bloom at the same time so she will stop laughing at me). Surely it can't be that much of a difference five miles from here?
Some sites I have read say the hardy Hibiscus vary the number of years it takes to reach maturity. Some say 2-5 and I found one that says 3-8. Sounds like where it is growing isn't a concern, it's the age of the plant?
Thanks Song... it's really is a sight to see her/his plant when driving by the house. Talk about get your attention! Toni... I think you may be right. I keep telling her that mine is just a baby in comparison. I know that plant has been growing for 20+ years. Funny thing about that aunt. She is NOT into plants. Her husband was the one that planted everything there. She has a few that they she likes.. the rest, she's been having us dig 'em up or chop 'em down. I get a kick out of her being enthusiastic about this one... even if she gives me grief over mine lagging behind. Side note: See that photo? She "made" me take some of that fern and "made" me plant it next to my Dinner Plate. And I was "forced" to take seeds from that 4 o'clock... this year it's finally blooming.
