I am very disapointed with my tomato plants this year. I have a Better Boy and an Heirloome Beefsteak that haven't anything hardly. Maybe only a dozen or so tomatos. The few better boys that I have gotten have turned rotten in a matter of 3 or 4 days after ripening. The beefsteaks have only gotten to about 1/2 the size they should be, before ripening. And then they rotted the same as the BB. The Roma Grape plant has been producing it's heart out with about 200 maters. One guy on tv said that it is because of the weather. We have had hot days and nights and maters like hot days and cool nights.

Thank goodness the Roma Grape is producing well for you or you wouldn't have many home grown tomatoes to eat this year.
My own plants aren't doing well either as they don't seem to want to form fruits. There are plenty of flowers but they're coming to nothing so far.

Captain, I have heard MANY people say their tomatoes are there but not turning red yet. We have really struggled to keep our tomatoes from keeling over from the blight. Spray, Spray, Spray!!! Our pink ones are the best flavored, but the hardest to grow :( , the Legends look terrible, cherry's are ugly,(Celebrity did OK) blah, blah, blah! All the ones in the high tunnel aren't ever wet, so the plants look great. It's all the wet foliage that is the problem.

I think it has been a very hard year to grow tomatoes. Sorry you were so disappointed in your crop.

I'm just starting to get ripe tomatoes now, and they are smaller than usual. But Mmmm are they delicious!

Captain, some years are hard on tomatoes, and this was one of them. We got a good crop of Celebrities in late spring, and our yellow pear and Sungolds are still producing a handful a day, but the vines look awful.
Keep at 'em, and maybe they will start producing for you when it gets a bit cooler, or dryer, or wetter, or whatever!

I can`t complain this year about the tomato crop. I supplied several families with tomatoes when theirs did not do well !! I had them running out my ears and couldn`t can them fast enough. But for the last two years harvest was mediocre at best. Is everyones doing the same as yours? I have never had really good results from beefsteak types. Super Fantastic VF1 is good for a larger type. Its similar to beefsteak but fewer problems and better producer. A smaller variety that is a consistant producer is Homestead. I always plant several varieties that I know do well here and at least one new variety each year. If one doesnt do well,, I have backup types.

I usually plant one Early Girl and one Better Boy. The Eary one gives me maters by July 4th and the Better Boy keeps me going until first frost. But not this year. When I bought them, Home Depot was having a sale, buy 2 and get the 3rd one free. I thought I had picked up an Early Girl, but when I got home, I saw that it was a Roma Grape. And it turned out to be the best of the lot. Next year I think it will be a full sized Roma and an early Girl.

Same here Capt. My toms are yucky this year. We had too much cool and wet, followed by hot days and nights. I thought I'd try a bush type plant, and I don't like it, the plant or the toms. They just don't have a very good flavor.
As for my cherry tom, it is weird shaped plant, and has not produced even 1 fruit! Stupid thing is about to get torn out and tossed.
My pals have been sharing theirs,so I have been able to savor a good BLT, and salads and such.
I have never had such bad luck. Live, Garden and learn...

Hi all: ya our tomatoes are doing weird stuff also. Our grape tomatoes are ripening really good. But when you cut them open they are green inside. I figured it was because of the hot weather ripening them to fast. But they still look weird. Taste ok, but look weird.
Our early girl has a lot of green tomatoes which are not ripening. One did start, but rotted from the bottom up before it was pickable.
Most of our kohlrabi plants are getting long, leggy, and are not producing anything edible. Between the weather, and bugs and critters eating our garden it has been a very frustrating season. :-?

Early on, I thought our tomatoes were not doing well, but given time, and rain, they are growing quite well, but the ripening has been a bit slow. We get plenty for eating, but not enough at once for canning. The local produce folks have a half bushel for $3.99, so there won't be a shortage for winter.
I have a great photo to show "Nature's Way" provided I can download it.
