Cone flowers, echinacea is kind of picky in my micro environment. Whether or not I divide depends on the size of your clump. In my amateur and crude methods the clump needs to be of good size in my experience. I dig the entire clump getting as much dirt as possible to keep the roots in tack, divide with a knife cutting the clump in half disturbing as few roots as possible. I do it early in the spring. Since my clumps haven’t been that big the last few years I have been going with seeds from the original plants and scattering them in sandy planting areas in the fall. Winter sowing works best for me. Now Black-eyed Susans are easier to divide and I just take rooted side shoots. Getting to know my microclimates and plants is always a challenge as the neighbors evergreens have totally change my garden.
i have blackeyed susans every where i guess the seeds blow around ever where, i love them though i have dug up a few of them they do very well dug up and put some where else, would you know any thing about danish poppies my husband bought me some i havent planted them yet but pictures of the they are beautiful, everything i have read said just mess up the dirt and spread them on top not to cover them up but just seems like that wouldnt be to good but then i have never had them before, i just thought i would ask you. thank you margie
