Do not disturb me this evening between 8 and 10 p.m. The long-awaited, greatly-anticipated third season of Downton Abbey will be on TV. I have fed the cat, put the chickens to bed, and by golly, I'm going to watch every minute of the program, come what may! I love Maggie Smith, and wish I had the courage to say some of the things that she as the Dowager Lady Grantham says!
There was an article in our paper this morning about this show. Sounds like something I would really like. Don't know how I missed the first 2 seasons Maybe they have it on dvd???
Amazon has it on DVD or instant video...kinda pricey though. Keep an eye on the schedule for your local PBS station, they may repeat the first season before long.
I'm glad that you have the chance to see it in the US.It is a huge hit here in the UK and we(both Mark and I) have been hooked from the very first episode. We spend each episode trying to pick out the best put-down/line from the Dowager Countess. High on our list is "What's a week-end?" I'm still trying to get hold of the third series on DVD-I suppose I'll have to wait until the shops are restocked after the Christmas rush.
Oh, I LOVE the dowager Lady Grantham! Maggie Smith is a national treasure (wish she was ours!). She gets the best lines! And if someone doesn't slap Thomas up side the head soon, I'll have a fit.
I was totally clueless, Jane, so I didn't call to ask what you were talking about. I have no tv and even if I have on in front of me all I do is surf the channels...nothing usually interests me long enough to endure the commercials. I went to a hotel to pick up a friend on Saturday night and since it was late (11:30pm) I was the only one in the lobby, I flipped from channel to channel, hardly leaving any thing on long enough to get the gist of the show. I saw football for a split second, some sports talk for another second, an infomercial moment, a Rover, or something, came over a sand dune in, I think Saudi Arabia, brand new shiny and yellow, roll as it bounced over the last dune and that was the end of the clip, oops!, then I saw some man smashed his shoulder on some rocks as he was para sailing? maybe, next to the ocean and I couldn't believe he bounced right off and only had a big scrape ...duh, what a stupid thing to do....I was so glad when my friend showed up from Iowa... I am glad you got to see your show, though. Were we all courteousness enough to leave you alone from 8-10?
My wife watched it last night on PBS. She said they offered all 3 seasons on DVD for over $200. But she said that our library has them to check out and watch. So check your local library. I have also copied movies that I have checked out from the library! Our Library started a new feature the first of the year. They are partnered with Freegal ( stands for free and legal). You can download 3 songs per week for free, legally. They are yours to keep too. I downloaded 3 last week and 3 more this morning. It's pretty neat! I downloaded them to the computer then transferred them to my Kindle Fire. Now I can listen to music while I read!
Carolyn, I totally agree with you on the paucity of programs worth watching on TV. Friends will make a reference to some program or "star" and then catch my blank look. I have no idea whom or what they are talking about. That's one reason why I am so happy that Downton Abbey is going into its third season, with a fourth promised. If it weren't for Jacques Pepin, Cook's Country, and Downton, our TV would just sit there looking blank, too! (Our TV is over 30 years old--if it ain't broke, don't get a new one!).
Good morning all. My Hubby and I have a " ROKU " and have discovered many British series and Love them all, fell in love with " Downton Abby " and watched all episodes of " Upstairs Downstairs ". We don't have a local PBS so we enjoy watching all these with out Commercial interruption.
I to love Downton Abby. I told my hubby if there was football on at the same time that he would be relegated to the basement TV. But there wasn't. So I had to explain to him who was related to who, and their relationship to whom ever. He is not really interested in those types of series or movies. But I love these types of series, and movies from the same period. Especially the Jane Austin movies. Last nights first series in season 3 was so good. The dowager Lady Grantham does have some of the best lines and put downs. She was on top of her game last night. Marlin I agree with you. Thomas needs to be swatted in more ways than one. Especially in his ego being taken down a few sizes. I wasn't sure if Matthews and Mary's wedding would go off without a hitch or not. It did! But there is more brewing in the wings. I is hard to wait until next Sunday for the next episode.
check your PBS listings for a program called Secrets of Highclere Castle. It's the history of the castle where Downton Abbey is filmed. Really interesting.
What is confusing is that Downton is set in Yorkshire, which is in the very north of England, yet Highclere Castle is less than an hour from where I live in the south.Really ought to visit it sometime...
Kiasmum, when you go to Highclere, take lots and lots of photos! We expect a guided tour, complete with commentary on the grounds, gardens, etc.
