I was telling Garden talk friend I have known for many year. Got so many D.L all over. She said where she is from in Tenn. they call them HomeStead . They are the orange ones.
We call them ditch lilies or wild lilies. I was told that the Indians (Native Americans) ate the buds when they were several inches long. I ate a bud and it did taste almost like a green bean. Don
The cobblestone streets echoed with the sound of horse's hoofs as a lady with two children in tow browsed the stalls of an outdoor market in Charlestown, MA in the spring of 1905. She was looking for flowers to plant in her, as yet, unfinished summer home 20 miles from the busy city streets. The orange lilies waved in the spring air as if beckoning to be taken to a more peaceful place. Eager hands selected the orange daylilies and the flowers soon found themselves adding color to a summer garden thousands of miles away from their origins in central Asia. This year their descendants will again add color to her grandson's garden a few miles away from their original planting 107 years ago. Jerry
I like your story Jerry. I call em ditch Lilies, but I do like them. Just not in my yard We planted tons of them at the lake. I wish they bloomed for a longer period though.
I've always just called them Day Lilies. They were my Mom's favorite. Well... she loved any kind of lilies. But for as long as I can remember, she had them growing in front of the house. (And some are still there.)
I have always called them daylilies. i grew up in NJ and now live in MA. My sister-in-law is from OH and she has always called them ditch lilies. Maybe the central part of the US calls them ditch lilies?
You can see miles of them in the ditches in Iowa.I have many along fence.Jerry my big guy. He bought some little girls. Selling them out front of their house. They had picture that they would look like Jerry I like the story also. Iowa is know for planting wild flowers. Seen Miles of Purple cones in one area.
I also loved that story Jerry...I love ditch lillies..they are very happy here in the south..aha!! another plant to add to the garden this year....LOL...i'll just dig some up from my mother's home in SC
I like Jerry's story, too. There are the wild "ditch " daylilies & their hybridized ancestors, daylilies. These hybrids are a far cry form the ditch ones. The ones that line our ditches are orange. The hybrids come in every color but pure white & blue. Some of them fetch a pretty penny, too.I have been collecting daylilies or Hemorocallis for about 40 years. I love all flowers, petunias, zinnias, etc but daylilies are the mainstay of my yard.
