We probably all do it. In the excitement of the coming spring we plant every seed in every package of seeds we bought. When it's time to thin them out, we just can't bear to throw that little live plant away so we repot them all. Then at transplant time we realize that every 'cotton picken' one of them sprouted and grew strong enough to transplant and as a result we will have enough vegies to feed an army or flowers to supply every florist in town. When you are cleaning out flower beds and pull out all the extra seedlings coming up that you really don't want. Pot them up instead of throwing them away. Do a Yahoo search for your local rEcycle list, Freecycle list or possibly even Craigslist, join and give the seedlings away to other gardeners who can use them. Contact your local Master Gardener association. Master Gardener's are required to do community service gardening and many work in community gardens that grow food for homeless shelters, food banks and women's shelters. Many schools have garden projects where the students grow food for their families, contact your local school district.
Yep Toni I am also guilty. And I too donate all my extra seedlings to three different schools in the township nearby. AT these schools they cultivate fresh produce and distribute the harvest amongst those students whose families need it.
This is absolutly great advise I knew that there was a "Hunt for the hungry" program that took donated game animals for the food shelters but I haven't heard of anything for vegetables I'll have to look this up thank you so much!
We haven't got anything of the sort here, but I feel I should whisper the fact with a very red face. I'm so pleased that you're able to help others with your seed surplus. Please keep up the good work.
