Odd question I'm sure. My grandmother, who taught me to garden and kept a 2 acre garden into her 70's alway picked rocks. So that is what I do. Fist, walnut, pea sized. No matter what, I pick 'em. Why do you or don't you? :?: :-D
My landlady put rocks on our driveway by picking rocks out of their garden last year. This year they are working on holes in the road. I usually pick up the rocks when I work in the garden, too. Funny thing, at the top of the hill their garden is very rocky. At the bottom of the hill, I find very few. dooley
Hubby & I both like to look at rocks. He used to keep a small round in his pocket. Some we'll keep... others are just tossed aside. Guess this fascination comes from spending hours looking for arrowheads when we go up to ETex.
I pick rocks at my aunt's house in West Virginia, that was formerly my grandmother's and has been in my family for many many years. I like to bring them back to put in my garden to remind me of my family.
Hmmmmm.....rocks.....New England......Behind almost each rock is a story. Walk the woods in any of its six states and you will find a rock wall. Far removed from civilization it is a remnant of of farming in New England. Colonial farmers toiled till the sun set picking rocks out of their plowed fields and deposited them in the thousands of miles of rock walls that are an icon of the area. Even today as people dig holes for flowers, plants and trees the clink of a rock is more often heard than not. Yes, we New Englanders pick rocks and rocks and more rocks. Jerry
I have taught the kids to pick stones when they are at the allotment. When they see any lying on the surface, they pick them up and put them on the stone path that runs along one end. We have found some great pebbles with fossils on when we have been at the beach along the south coast, and when I wash daughter number ones blazer, she always has a small, smooth pebble in a pocket. I take it out and put it in the fish tank, and sure enough, when I next come to wash her blazer, there is another pebble.
Whenever I go way to a new place, I pick up a rock to bring home. I have piles of stones around my house... sometimes I paint them.... Last summer when I went to Peru, I brought some from home to leave there too. I guess I am more of a rock picker than I realized...
Ah so i am not the only one that is stone mad,..while in the garden any stone that comes to the surface is graded and used for either supporting a wall,..added to the pathways,..or used in a flowerpot to aid drainage,..as a child coming home from school i always picked a rock near school and left it down near home,..i was pleased with myself knowing it could never do so on its own, .
Hah, Phillip, something about your comment reminded me that when I was a kid, I'd sometimes find a rock and kick it all the way to wherever it was I was going, to school or home or the store... or my friend's house. And then coming back, I'd kick the same stone. Funny the things that you forget, to be pleasantly remembered on another day.
Its just about to rain so i ran into the house for a tea break,..smiling to myself over you kicking the stone to and from home,..now you have me regressing,..and smiling even more trying to picture you kicking the stone.
I pick stones. TONS of them. Small stones, large stones, sparkling stones. I used them around the edges of my rock gardens, I pile them around the base of my shed to keep the critters out, and this year I'm filling the pot holes in the driveway. Just when you think you have picked all the rocks, it rains and new ones appear!
My favorite rock was retrieved after reading about kettle potholes formed as rocks drilling holes in rock stream beds. One day I reached into a kettle hole filled with mountain chilled water and was rewarded with a smooth polished piece of granite. 40 years later I still have the same rock. Jerry
Nice find Jerry!, i love finding that special rock,..i was taking a tea break on the lake shore and spotted what i thought was a small pure white pebble,..by the time i pulled it out of the water it turned out to be 6 inches by 6 inches. ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) 12 inches wide, like a brain!. ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) 1 rock for each boat trip ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden ) I still need lots more ( photo / image / picture from Philip Nulty's Garden )
