I agree Sjoerd, its just almost impossiable to grow Tomatoes up here unless you have a heated greenhouse. I have a small portable heater on very low near the planters. But now the problem is the sun. Sigh, go from to much to not enough. So i keep the kitchen lights on for a few hours each night after it starts to get dark. Geeez my power bill,,,lol. What we don't do for our plants, huh. All i can say is that little tomato better taste darn good! lol. red or green!

Hee hee...what I ment was that the condiotions that you've got in your kitchen must be good for the toms, cos they're growing and producing.
But you really do have quite a challenge on your hands there with growing the toms.
When did you plant the seeds anyway?

Biita I am impressed. I really thought you wouldn't be able to grow tomatoes or chillis but you've certainly proved me wrong!! I hope your plants produce lots of fruits for you so that you can make your salsa. Well done!! :-D

Thanks Eileen!! I'm in probably as much shock as everyone else...lol.

Sjoerd i started the seeds the middle of May. I have topped them off because now they are as tall as my windows and almost to the ceiling,,,lol. The sun during the midnight sun time just made them grow and grow, now that the sun has eased off, not to mention i have very naked toms, half way up, they are now producing flowers,,,lots of flowers. but we will see. Trial and error.

Congrats Biita, really hope they ripen for you.

Do you have a heating pad? You can set the pots on one or two of those to keep the soil warm.

We used grow lights. Dan got them at the garden center. It tells you how many hours to leave them on each day. I don't know what's different about them. They have a florescent bulb that is sort of a bluish color. Maybe a regular florescent bulb would work and you could experiment with how long to leave them on during the day or night. I still have small tomatoes on my plants. I picked two tomatoes and three zucchini yesterday. I hope yours do very well for you. dooley

We don't have any heating pads, but i do have the portable heater going,,,on low, and with the sun that comes in during the day and well me cooking, its stays pretty hot. My biggest problem now is the light. Its still sunny here, but not until after 12 noon. Its generally cloudy until then, but the sun goes over the mountain about 18:30 or 6:30 pm, and it gets dark now about 21:00 or 9 pm. The sun is so low in the sky now the mountains get in the way. I have set up track lighting to help spot light on them,, so we will see.

Thanks all, lets hope this is the start of something good. Tomatoes in the Arctic!!!
