Does anyone use Michigan peat anymore?

I have raised beds and my top surface is a little coarse for direct sowing seeds. I was wondering about putting down a layer about 1/4"-1/2" deep of Michigan peat, sewing my seeds and covering with Michigan peat to the proper depth. Has anybody tried this?

 

I used to use a lot of peat, but isn't it not politically correct now?
