Shortly after we moved to Texas I was in a hair salon, and another new arrival from North Carolina asked, "Does it ever just rain in Texas?" She was referring to the torrential downpours that had been occurring off and on for a couple of weeks. It was either no rain, or lots of rain--nothing in between.
We are now coming out of a three month drought. We had 7" of rain last week, and right now we are having sheets of rain coming down with the same amount --7"--predicted for now through Sunday. It would seem that it doesn't "just rain" in Texas. We either get vast amounts in a short time, or absolutely nothing for months.
Certainly makes gardening, and life, interesting!

You haven't been through a Spring with rain wrapped tornadoes, have you? That makes you really appreciate the sheets of rain in cooler temperatures.

It sure does pour there, just returned for a weeks' visit to the DFW area, and one night it did not let up a bit. I was a bit worried in the morning getting to the airport, and we did have quite a bit of turbulence, but we survived.

Toni, do you remember the tornado that hit Jarrell, TX? We were here for that--our first spring in Texas. A neighbor came over and said there were tornado warnings out, so I put the ladder and paint away that I was using for painting the front porch, and kept an eye on the sky. I saw two small tornadoes touch down to the south of us, and my husband called from work to see if I was all right. I told him I had a mattress over the tub in an inside bathroom, the cat in a crate, and was thawing a steak for dinner. I do appreciate the rain, just wish it would spread itself out a bit more!
Cuatro-gatos, glad your flight wasn't too bad. Please return to visit Texas when we have better weather!

Yep, I remember that one. Dec 1984 a big one hit Mesquite, that one was hidden by rain so heavy that we could not see past the end of our driveway on the west side of Dallas so it really caught everyone in Mesquite on the east side of Dallas totally by surprise.

But, no there usually isn't such a thing as just rain here. In Spring it's accompanied by either hail or tornadoes....sometimes both. Summer it takes a vacation and in Fall hail or tornadoes can join in the fun again. Winter, if it is warm, rain, hail and tornadoes sometimes make up the evil dark triad.

Cuato-gatos, that rain was the first DFW area had since early Sept....hopefully you can pick a dryer time for your next visit. But I don't recommend anytime between June and Sept unless you really, really like hot and dry.
