When we were eating lunch today, a pod of dolphins swam past. Here are some pictures I took. I think you can see the dorsal fin of a juvenile dolphin in the last picture.
I'm not in the least bit jealous - nope - definately not - not even a little teensy weensy bit. However I am positively green with envy!!!! First my son takes superb piccies of dolphins whilst on an archeological dig in Skye and then you show us yours. Tisn't fair I tell you!!!!
Well, how does this fit in w/ your envy? While in the water with my daughter, brother & nieces about an hour ago, the life guard blew his whistle & told us to get out. We turned & saw the tell-tale shadow of a shark. My brother stayed back (adults are not attractive to these sharks, according to the guards) and I came in with the 3 girls. I had three bright pink floaties on my arms, was dragging one girl on a body board and herding my daughter & another niece ahead of me. We got out quickly and only after we got out, did I tell the girls, it was a shark. From the balcony about 20 minutes later, we saw 3 more swim through in the opposite direction. We're out of the water for a little while.
great pics of the dolphins! I've seen a few while on the seadoo. I just loved it. I know Santa Rosa,,,the long stretch of sandy land strip. Awesome place. Half the time you can't find the road because the sand is blown over it from both sides of the strip. In norwegian that is a nes.
We have our Dolphin watches here on the coast too. I love watching them and your photos are fantastic. Thanks for sharing them. Gardengater
Do you know what species of shark they were WT? I'm fascinated by all sea life but most especially by the large mammals and fish that are seen around coastlines. Oh if only I could afford to travel to Florida!!!!
The lifeguard indicated that what we saw were bull sharks. I was hoping for something more docile. Apparently, this place is "crawling" (or should I say "swimming"?) with bull sharks. I'd thought they preferred deeper water, such as the deep blue channels further out, but was told today, they'll come right up to the beach. The lifeguard said, he's seen these boogers swim right up to the shallow water & sort of show off. They're apparently quite intelligent & have very good eyesight. He also told us, he saw a beach-goer walk up to the water, bend over to look closely, reach in & with his hands pulled out an 8-foot bull shark & threw it on the beach. Now, up 'til then, I'd been rather comfortable being in the water up to about 4 - 5 feet depth, but hearing that those nasty critters come so close bothers me. I realize the incidents are few, but I don't want to be a statistic. If I remember correctly, bull sharks are some of the most aggressive & deadly for encounters with humans. My brother and I have resolved to not go back in the water without a make-shift spear - a sharp stick, or broken net handle to "discourage" any inquiries from them. Makes me want to go get a cattle prod!
I found this article about bull sharks - makes intersting reading. I certainly wouldn't want to go in the water if these fellows were around!!!! http://www.killersharks.co.uk/bullshark.html
Wow! What an exciting vacation you're having! I was envious till I read about the sharks - you couldn't get me back in the water for anything! We used to go to the gulf coast every summer and always enjoyed seeing the dolphins. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and keep a watch out for those sharks! Martha
Amazing shots of those dolphins, just wow wow and wow again. As for the shark, eek! Terrifying indeed. I am always fascinated by the large critters that live on this planet with us though.
Good dolfin pics. I enjoy seeing them alot. It's easy to see that you folks are having a great vacation. It's thoughtful of you to take the time to post these and stay in touch.
I talked to 2 lifeguards this afternoon & asked when was the last time a person was bitten by a shark off this beach. They told me of 2 incidents. One: a girl was swimming with mackerel on the second sand bar, was having her "monthly visitor" and a bull shark was after the mackerel. They think, the shark encountered her, saw her as a threat & attacked. Unfortunately, she bled out. A second case, a man was out fishing, standing in the water up to his chest & had shrimp as bait in his pocket & was attacked by a black tip. I believe he survived. So, they indicate, you really gotta do something kind of stupid to get shark-bit.
