I really want a double knockout rose and planted it in an area that gets filtered sunlight. Will it do well there? The area looks just right for a rose like plant but am a little apprehensive because it doesn't get direct sunlight. Should I move it? Most of my garden is in shade / partial sun and filtered sun.

    Thanks for your help.

The knock out rose is like other roses, it needs full sun...a minimum of 5-6 hours a day. Those hours can be either morning or afternoon but it needs full sun.

    Hi Tina,

I sympathize. My garden has the same conditions: no full sun anywhere. I too have a Double Knock-out Rose. It does ok, not great.

There is an old fashioned climber, Rosa Zephirine Drouhin that can better handle less than full sun. I have one growing in less than 1/2 day and it does well. The tall canes have the added benefit of being relatively thornless.

Roses are definitely sun lovers. If you do have a sunnier place, I would suggest moving it this spring.

Since I just planted it 3 days back -I am thinking I will move it to a better location. I hope that's a good idea?

Tina if you have a spot with more sun, I would definitely move it. You will get a healthier bush with more blooms.

I tried finding a sunnier spot for the rose today but I couldn't find one which will be suitable for the rose.

Over the weekend, I did find the perfect spot for my double knockout rose. This spot gets plenty of sunlight in the morning and also afternoon. I hope this works better.

    Hi Tina,
Good luck with it. Your bush will thank you for your efforts.

I have long wanted some kind of sunlight meter that I could place about the garden & would tell me how many hours of sunlight (morning light, mid-day & afternoon light) various spots received. I imagine these meters are available, but also imagine they might be expensive.

I send you good growing wishes for your rose bush.
