I came home a couple hours ago and there were about a dozen dragonflies congregating in the yard. Now there must be hundreds of them. I haven't seen them all summer. Hmmm, I wonder why they do this. Does anyone ever have this happen?

Idk but it either has something to do with migration or sex.

Carolyn, we have dragonflies and damselflies all summer. However, they have been congregating more this month. We will see several, up to a dozen or a few more, at the top of the trees, just buzzing about.
A friend of ours is a "dragonfly expert", and I'll ask him about it. He teaches at a local university, and with classes just started, he may be in the mood for a simple, easily answered question!

I wonder if they all could have hatched out at the same time.
    What a curious thing, C.

This isn't the first time I have sen this, but there were so many yesterday. You could hear them "run into" each other, but I don't think it was a mating thing, again, I could be totally wrong, but I would think earlier in the season or even spring would be a more logical time for mating to me. Now they should be moving south, dying or hibernating, whatever they do for the winter.

I just recently started seeing dragonflies. I was wondering where they were all summer. I seen two attached, is it there breeding time or something?

Intersting, Eileen. I think that explains what I saw more so than mating activity, but they were right ahead of the cold front not behind it, hmmm, I wonder if there was anything to that. Tuesday and Wed were 95f(35c) today it is a high of 59f(15c). Vast difference between the days.
